Pre-2004
Investors were required to make the UK their primary residence and invest at least £750,000 in government bonds, stocks, or corporate bonds, while holding a minimum of £1 million in the UK.
2004 Regulatory Changes
Allowed investment funds to be sourced via loans from UK-regulated institutions.
2008 Points-Based System
Formal introduction of the Tier 1 (Investor) route with a £1 million minimum investment.
2011 Accelerated Settlement
Investors investing £1 million could apply for settlement after five years and citizenship after six years. The settlement period was shortened to three years for investments of £5 million and two years for investments of £10 million or more. Residence requirements were relaxed to allow up to 180 days absence per year.
2014 Threshold Update
The minimum investment was raised to £2 million, with the full amount required to be invested in UK companies or government bonds.
